On Friday January 24 the kindergarten, first grade and second grade kids all went to the San Francisco Symphony for a special concert event. The goal of this field trip was to show the kids what the symphony is about. It all started with a ride on a big yellow school bus. The kids were jumping up and down when the bus arrived. Everyone was so excited just to ride on the bus. This was a big treat and I think the field trip could’ve ended with the ride and the kids would’ve been thrilled.
We safely arrived to the symphony and once inside the conductor took the kids on a musical journey explaining some of the different instruments as well as engaging them in the songs. The play list was as follows:
Wagner Prelude to Act III of Lohengrin
Rossini Storm from William Tell
Copland Fanfare for the Common Man
Copland Hoedown from Rodeo
Brahms Lullaby
Sousa The Stars and Stripes Forever
Williams Music from Star Wars
The kids were able to hear what “rain” sounds like played by instruments in Storm from William Tell. They got to clap along and sing “Yee Haw!” to the Hoedown. Took a bit of a nap during the Lullaby and clapped again in Stars and Stripes. The biggest hit of the day was music from Star Wars. Most of the kids excitedly sang along and were happy they knew this one.
It was a crazy day. We were in and out seamlessly. All arrived back to school safely and just in time for lunch! We can only hope this experience has inspired some of our kids to be a future Beethoven. Stay tuned!
