Middle School Arts and Computer Science enrichment

Middle School parents and families!

An update on Middle School Arts and Technology enrichment at SFC…  As you may have heard from your child or your child’s teacher, we are not offering elective classes to middle school students this semester. Instead, on Tuesdays, each Middle School student is taking a Computer Science class and an Art class.

Mr. Peery’s Computer Science class 2017-2018 MyCS Syllabus

In this introductory course, students will learn the foundational concepts and skills of computer science (CS). They will transition from being the consumers of technology to the creators of technology, and they will explore how to use the power of computers to solve big, real-world problems.

The course is designed to be fun, engaging, relevant, collaborative, and creative. Students will build their understanding through creative projects in the Scratch programming language, where they will make animations, music, games, stories, and art.

Mr. Peery conducts the class in Google Classroom, and you can get a weekly summary (which would allow you to see what work they have completed and what is missing) through this. See the attached pdf for more information or contact Mr. Peery at peeryo@sfusd.edu.

Art Class: the “Meet Me Here” art project

In their Tuesday art classes, students are getting a “sampler” of different art forms: Clay, Photography, Drawing and Painting, a bit of Graphic Design, and a bit of Installation Art.

The students are creating art that relates to their identity this semester: using art as a way to communicate to others about who I am right now. They will each be compiling their work and displaying it in a small, temporary installation on December 12th (more information coming later) to share with the school community. Family members, friends and other students will be invited to see their work on that day during the student’s art class period.

Also a quick note to 8th grade parents– I will be offering some portfolio support sessions for students who are interested in applying to Ruth Asawa School of the Arts in:

-Visual Art

-Technical Theatre or Costume Design

-Architecture and Design

The informational meeting for students will be next Tuesday, 9/26 at lunch. Applications and portfolios are due to SOTA on December 13.

Finally, we are hoping to offer elective classes for students again starting in January. We are in the process of finding additional teachers for a few classes. If you would be interested in supporting the electives program by teaching a class to a small group of kids or in some other way, please feel free to reach out to me ASAP at:

Thank you for your support of Middle School enrichment and electives classes at SFC!
