Thanks to everyone who participated in the San Francisco Community School Read-A-Thon!
Congratulations to students who set individual reading goals and blew them out of the water. Congratulations to classes who read like crazy to fill their minutes-of-reading thermometers outside their classrooms. And a big high five to parents and families who did the fundraising– this Read-A-Thon raised over $16,000 (!!!) to support programs integral to our school.
The week was full of exciting activities: there was a “Not-So-Little Free Library” posted in the second floor hallway with books for the taking and reading. Students dressed in their pajamas for a pajama read-in one day, and dressed as a favorite book character another day. Buddy classrooms (older + younger classes) paired up and read together.
Published authors came to SFC! Childrens authors Marta Lindsey (Little Gray’s Great Migration), Emma Bland Smith, (Journey), Jill Diamond (Lou Lou and Pea and the Mural Mystery), and Young Adult author Nya Jade (The Year of Four) visited the school, presenting about their books and the writing process to different grade levels.
It was a true celebration of literacy and reading. We can’t wait for Read-A-Thon 2019!
